A harmoniser of shapes translated through colour, the painter Tonitza conducts a close study of nature, which always reveals itself to be interesting and instructive. For an in-depth understanding of the language of painting, the artist prefers the free study of nature in summertime, when colour flows freely and bright on the shapes. In the heart of nature he meets flowers, which emerge in the artist’s repertoire starting in the 20s. One of the first exhibitions in which we note the flowers is the joint exhibition "N.N. Tonitza – Ștefan Dimitrescu", from January-February 1920, within which the artist presented ten flower compositions. We can also note a fertile presence of flowers around the years 1935-1937 when, for three consecutive summers, the painter was at the Durău Skete (Neamț), where he did encaustic painting, along with his students from the Academy of Beaux Arts in Iași. In addition to the works completed here, the artist also dedicated his spare time to the study of flowers. The result of his work can be admired as part of the exhibitions of the "Group of Four", as well as in his personal exhibitions, where the artist displayed a significant number of compositions and panels with flowers ("Trandafiri" ("Roses"), "Petunii" ("Petunias"), "Trandafiri ghimpați" ("Thorn roses"), "Gladiole" ("Gladiolas"), "Crini" ("Lilies" et al.) (G.M.)
