From portraits, interior scenes, still lifes, landscapes, subjects inspired from the campaign for independence, to scenes from the life of the Romanian in the village, the artist claimed all artistic genres throughout his creation. With a visual and spontaneous manner in laying the brushstroke on the canvas, for the artist Grigorescu painting represents expression through colour, which should be treated openly, without the need for a preparatory intervention. This work method, acquired during his apprenticeship at Barbizon and followed throughout his career, is used to reveal impressive qualities as a colourist, along with an impressive variety in terms of artistic treatment. Back to Romania from Barbizon, Grigorescu was increasingly drawn by outdoor painting, which he later adopted as a way of working. Being equipped with visual traits, the artist captured impressive themes of village life, a space which acquires deep meaning during the course of his creation. Shepherds and shepherdesses with sheep, girls with the hayfork at their waist while gathering the hay, portraits of peasants and peasant women, ox-drawn carts going up and down countryside roads are the most recurrent subjects, which the artist expresses by assimilating direct experience.
