Lucian Grigorescu is distinguished by his personal impression on Romanian painting. His art cannot be strictly included in any of the European styles of the time, yet it confidently adopts elements of the Impressionist style. For the painter, it is not the drawing that comes first, but the colour from which the summer or afternoon light is released. Moreover, his works are spontaneously captured en plein-air and faithfully rendered, focusing on the moment and the on the mood, rather than on shapes or lines. In his still lifes, the painter harmoniously combines elements to render a warm atmosphere of watching and waiting, such as a loving welcome when returning home. Lucian Grigorescu volatized shapes in a harmonious chromatic disintegration. His painting did not express the concreteness of the physical presence as much as it did the moment in which light envelops the atmosphere, a moment well known from the long and dusty days of summer or from the intense heat of the midday rays.
