Considered by the critics of the time to be - in contrast with Grigorescu - "the painter of city life", Nicolae Vermont painted coffeehouse scenes, house interiors, or family scenes, with a marked Impressionist character. In his work, he aimed to obtain psychological effects using composition organisation and he successively embraced the particularities of the German and the French Impressionism. Vermont returned to the maternity theme repeatedly, both in his paintings, and in his drawings. The subject appears around the year 1898, when the artist displays "The Christening", a work centred around a group of women surrounding the mother who holds the baby. This work meets us with an intimate setting of the bright and cozy home, touched by the rays of the sun. We can distinguish elements such as the mirror, which reveals the mother both as an onlooker, watching over the baby, and as someone who is watched; the paintings decorating the walls, the flower bouquet, or the green plants lending warmth to the familiar setting. Vermont approaches his characters with tenderness and unaffectedness, as if transferring the sunshine into his colour palette. (D.C.)
