Fratele criticului de artă Nicolae Petrașcu, Gheorghe Petrașcu l-a cunoscut pe primul său mentor - Nicolae Grigorescu - chiar prin intermediul fratelui. Petrașcu inițiază primul itinerar de călătorii tot sub influența maestrului impresionist, descoperind astfel orașele din Bretania. Călător înfocat, pictorul a fost atras în special de peisajul francez și cel românesc, însă Veneția prezintă vedutele cele mai insolite.
