Născut la Dorohoi, Istrati, pasionat şi cochetând cu pictura încă de la vârsta de 9 ani, urmează în paralel cursurile de la Facultatea de Drept şi Academia de Arte Frumoase. În 1947, primeşte o bursă de studii din partea statului francez. La Paris, îşi aprofundează studiile la academia André Lhote şi Academia Naţională de Arte Frumoase. Stilul lui Alexandru Istrati evoluează rapid spre un abstracţionism liric liber, marcat de un verde profund, roşu violent şi galben intens.
