The marine landscapes cycle places itself in Petrașcu's artistic creation between 1923 and 1934, revealing new aspects and traits of his artistic vision. In Mangalia or Techirghiol, where he used to spend his summer holidays, the artist would accomplish a series of representative landscapes, centred on two main themes: the first one features a feminine silhouette in close-up in a broad frame; the second one presents a rocky frame, from which a wide view on the sea opens up. Reapproached in several paintings, the first theme puts the focus on the human figure. In his works from 1923 to 1925 a very frequent recurrence would be a fisherman, whereas in his works from the later years, there will be a woman carrying an umbrella, seen from behind or in semi profile. The difference between the two positionings is meant to amplify the perspective, whereas the silhouette will interrupt the chromatic range with white variations or strong shades of red. Other times, the role of chromatic complementary element will be played by the presence of a sailboat. (G.M.)
