Research information

The artwork was part of the solo exhibition at Mony Calatchi Gallery, Paris, 1970. The artwork was part of the solo exhibition at Francois Petit Gallery, Paris, 1970. The artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity from Mrs Marina Vanci-Perahim.

Having started his career very early, Jules Perahim would plunge into a genuine artistic adventure since the Interbellum years, shortly becoming one of the main figures of the Romanian Avant-garde. The collaboration with the left-wing magazines ("Viața imediată", "Unu", "Alge", "Cuvântul liber"), where he contributes with surrealist drawings, places young Perahim under the sign of a progressive position - nonconformist and against the bourgeoisie, influencing, with his activity, the continuity and the importance of the new artistic movement. The new approach addresses the spontaneous, which would start unexpectedly, being underpinned by the premise of giving up any barrier or dogma which could interfere with the freedom of creation. He would organize exhibitions both in Romania and abroad, in Prague, Paris, Geneva, Basel, Montreal, Jerusalem, Chicago or New York, places where he would become famous thanks to the surrealism of his art. Starting with 1959, chronicles, as well as specialist dictionaries, would mention him as an important representative of Surrealistic art, dedicating him a special place. 1969, the year marked by his emigration to France, would mark his decisive return to painting, to the innovative forms of expression, a time when he would focus on a mystical, fantastic, or sometimes lyrical surrealism, around which he would elaborate original compositions. This period saw the birth of works such as "Passage spontané de l'animal au mineral", "Gonflomanie", "Le débarquement", "La révolution impossible", "L'échappement", "La nuit dans la forêt", etc. (G.M.)
