With studies at the "Nicolae Grigorescu" Institute of Fine Arts, which he graduated in 1974, the artist Ioan Jean Pârvan will assert himself through an anecdotal sculpture, with a generous openness to the human. He will display personal exhibitions in Bucharest (1976; 1977; 1989; 1990), in Paris (1992; 1999), and equally in group exhibitions (1968, Craiova), symposiums (1985, Sighet) or exhibitions of Romanian art abroad (1988, Heilbroom; 1998, Leipzig). Attracted by the world of theatre, the grotesque and the transvestites, his world will be made up of a series of harlequins and clowns, favoured characters of his meticulously-expressive sculpture. Burlesque silhouettes, rhetorical gestures, grimaces, will propose under the guise of the transvestite themes such as melancholy, absurdity or irony. (G.M.)
