Ilustratorul Constantin Jiquidi (1865-1899) realiza încă din 1880 o serie de cromolitografii cu subiect militar, inspirându-se din istoria militară a României epocii sale. Succesul acestor produse era atât de mare, încât ele au fost tipărite mai târziu și sub forma unor cărți poștale ilustrate, veritabile piese de colecție.
