Pe numele său adevărat Alphonse Louis Constant (1810-1875), Eliphas Levi s-a ocupat cu pasiune de fenomenul ocultismului, pe a cărui temă a redactat numeroase lucrări. Pentru el, ocultismul era compus din trei elemente: universul material, voința umană înțeleasă ca forță supremă și microcosmosul alcătuit din totalitatea ființelor umane.
