The tilting of the lid determines both the positioning of the writing plane and reveals the interior comprised of spaces where writing instruments and paper could be stored. The upper part consists of two pieces, a fixed one at the bottom and a mobile one at the top. Both parts include various small-sized spaces where inkwells for ink, envelopes, stamps and other writing accessories could be stored. The lid is decorated with an ample perforated brass plate that replicates King Carl I's cypher. The item is kept in very good conservation condition.
