oil on cardboard, 48.5 x 59.5 cm, signed bottom right, in pen, "P. Iorgulescu Yor"

Nicolae Tonitza, with exact intuition, noted in Petre Iorgulescu-Yor a visionary, stating without hesitation: "His art will never be fixed, because the spirit of Iorgulescu [...] will rush and sprint [...]. Only one thing will remain unshaken: his talent". Yor's works stand out for their original vision and bold solutions. Among them, we mention "Lake Como", "Landscape - Mangalia" and "Street in Sighișoara". The most remarkable decade from an artistic point of view is between 1925 and 1935, representing the period of full maturity of the plastic manner and the way of expressing. Thus, Yor excels as a city landscapist, being more interested in evoking the atmosphere of the place, not the picturesque. Frequent travels to France and Italy, the discovery of Balchik and the predisposition towards en plein-air painting are the basis of an artistic style characterized by the tendency to purify details and to essentialize the image. Through painting technique, but also through chromatic preferences, Yor outlines the sensuality of volumes. This work, probably made between 1927 and 1929, presents the city landscape of Baia Mare, marked by a row of houses transposed onto the canvas in an unfinished form. The absence of details, the simplicity of shapes and the solid masses of robust colors contribute to the essentialization of the image. (L.M.)
