Although he is recognised as the most representative Romanian portrait artist, having painted the portraits of high official figures, heads of state, and having been the artist of the elite everywhere he lived, be it France, Switzerland, or the USA, his themes also evoked landscapes and still life. One of the few artists to cultivate the black poetic, the dark scene becoming the universal background for almost all his works. The same importance that impressionists gave to light, this artist gave to darkness. In the early days of his artistic path, the artist's thematic range was a tribute to Grigorescu, but he gradually detached from any influence whatsoever, as he built a strongly individual style. Starting from 1906, he takes part in a series of exhibitions, the first one being at the Official Salon in Paris, followed by the Artistic Youth and the Jubilee Exhibition, where he obtains the gold medal. In 1911, he obtains the Distinction of Honour at the Paris Salon for his painting "Țiganii la drum" ("Gypsies on the Road"). In 1936, the artist is appointed as a painting professor at the Bucharest Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1941 he becomes Chancellor of the Academy of Arts.
