Thematic of a European resonance, introduced by J.F. Millet in the mid-19th Century, and outstandingly reinterpreted by Van Gogh towards the end of the same century, land work represented for Camil Ressu a highly meaningful topic, even beyond the figurative popularity induced by his predecessors. The Romanian village, as well as the peasant and his life, would define the painter's career almost entirely, and the reinterpretation of such an important theme can only offer the opportunity for Ressu's unmistakable style, in connection with the European realism and post-impressionism.
