Undoubtedly, Samuel Mützner's closeness to Balchik is one of the most understandable artistic actions of the contemporary Romanian painting. As a painter who travelled all the continents during the period of discovering his own style, Mützner could not have missed the encounter with the oasis of orientalism and seafaring that defined interwar Balkanism. He was visiting the "colony" for the first time in 1924, probably brought by his partner Rodica Maniu, who had first come to Balchik just after the First World War, in 1920. The two would return every year to paint sea views or views of the wild bays of the Silver Coast, becoming the most important artistic couple of the interwar period visiting the Colony. In the '30s they would even build a paint studio residence, fervently painting in Balchik until its loss in 1940.
