Dimitrie Știubei is unanimously recognized as the marine art painter, an irremediable lover of the water world. He approached painting at the same time with defining an exceptional career as a seaman, and as in 1919 he enrolled at the Artillery, Engineering and Marine School in Bucharest, he made his first drawings and watercolours with marine themes during the holidays at Techirghiol when he was 15 years old. During the interwar period, Știubei passionately practiced both trades: in 1921 he graduated from the Naval Academy, in 1925 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and in 1932 he was promoted to the rank of captain and was appointed royal aide in the Military House of the Royal Court of Romania. After the end of World War II, he would withdraw from the military role and dedicated to marine art painting only.
