A minstrel of the Romanian territory, Nicolae Grigorescu was the creator of a social work, a close observer of his fellowmen and a witness of joys and freedoms that he himself would share. Following his direct contact with nature, the artist would usually adopt a luminous palette, letting his feelings to become the painter. Alongside the palette, his brushwork would get invigorated, acquiring a particular liveliness, as the artist captures the local atmosphere, with a perfect plein-air technique. He would make the transition from narrative to descriptive with a sure and vigorous hand, managing to capture the most natural and noble features of his models. One of his favourites would be the shepherd, whom he often meets on his summer wanderings. Noble in speech, looks and posture, the shepherd of Grigorescu plains is lively and graceful in his movements. Like a monarch, the shepherd rules and watches over his place, bathed in the lights of cool mornings, or in the night-time chiaroscuro. For years, Grigorescu would follow the shepherd closely, wandering the mountains in summer to observe his movements and habits and lovingly researching him. On Ciungi, in the mountains of Agapia, in the Siret Valley, Buzău Valley, Moșneag Valley, or near the ruins of Văratec, the painter would sincerely surprise it with delight, his presence standing as a living testimony of the authentic Romanian space.
