The Dutch cartographer and publisher Jan Janssonius (1588-1664) published in 1638 the first three-volume edition of "Noul Atlas" ("New Atlas"), which was a great success. Danube Map In the upper right is a richly decorated cartouche with four allegorical figures, two on each side. A western king on the left is giving a reply to a sultan on the right. West and East united by the course of the Danube. On the lower left is a mythological scene in the form of the classical interpretation of the river. Engraving on copper, manually coloured after imprinting. The copy features damages due to time passing.
