French General Maurice Gustave Gamelin (1872-1958), one of the commanders of the French army during the First World War and Chief of the General Staff during the interwar period, visited Romania. After the official welcome in Bucharest, he stopped in Turnu-Severin. In the photograph, the city's deputy mayor, Gărdăreanu, was offering him the traditional bread and salt. There is the ex-libris of J. Berman photograph on the reverse.
