The work was written by Queen Mary during World War One as part of her contribution at her war efforts. The book was intended primarily for Romanian soldiers fighting on the front line, as well as for the civilian population. The present copy is a special one as it contains both the handwritten dedication and signature of the Queen to Margaret Miller-Verghy and her holograph bookplate on the title page at the top right. Margareta Miller-Verghy (1865-1953) was a writer, memoirist, translator, teacher and one of Queen Mary's main literary collaborators.
