The chromolithograph depicts Romanian peasants from Hadad (today Hodod, Maramureș), Transylvania, in costumes specific to the region. The piece was created by the British painter George Edwards Hering (1805-1879) who published in 1838 the work 'sketches of the Danube, Hungary and Transylvania", of which the present piece is a part, a work based on the artist's travels in those regions.
