tempera and gold leaf on carved wood, 62 x 41 cm

Jesus Christ in the Jordan water receives baptism from St. John the Baptist on a bank of the Jordan. God the Father in the open sky blesses him, with the Seal of the Holy Spirit descending upon him. Three angels on the opposite bank are witnessing the scene. Although the icon maintains the tradition of painting on wood from the 17th-18th centuries, the mastery of the painter who manages to create a real neoclassical masterpiece is noteworthy. The icon is framed by a superb decor of carved and gilded wood, with plant motifs and two confronting angels supporting a crown. (M.B.)
