Prince Antioh Cantemir (1709-1744) was born as the son of the ruler Dimitrie Cantemir and his wife Casandra, daughter of the ruler of Wallachia Șerban Cantacuzino. He spent his childhood in Constantinople with his family, and after a short stay in Moldavia, he arrived in the Russian Empire where he accompanied his father into exile. Here he dedicated himself to a diplomatic and literary career, being one of the founders of modern Russian literature. The present copy is part of the second edition published in London in 1750, after the first edition had been a great success the year before. The binding is vintage, made of leather.
