Aeroplastics Contemporary; Paula Cooper Gallery; Galeria Juana de Aizpuru

In the opening of "The Interpretation of Dreams" exhibition at the Paula Cooper Gallery in 2001, the artist declared: "In the dream world, there is no up and down, right or wrong. It was with this feeling that I created the works." Andres Serrano's "The Interpretation of Dreams" series stages the author's own dreams, nightmares or fantasies. Both intimate and personal, but also idiosyncratic, these images start from familiar motifs, symbols, archetypes, associating artistic composition with portraits of celebrities. These are decontextualised to highlight a wide range of fears, unconscious desires, sexual fantasies, social or racial divisions. All these emotions are closely linked to the image of the human body, defined by a sophisticated visual, spiritual, psycho-social culture built over time. In an interview with The Standard, Andres Serrano stated that he tries to keep his images as simple and crude as possible, believing that art is for everyone, is not elitist, is not just for intellectuals and people in select circles, and that this is a concept that we need to break away from in contemporary times. All the more so because, he said in the same interview, in troubled times of social anxiety and depression, art gives you hope. It gives you an ending to look forward to. (I.S.)
