acrylic on canvas, 100 x 73 cm, 100 × 73 cm, signed bottom right, with black, "Mazilu"

Combining contemporary surrealism with the influences of Nordic Renaissance art, artist George Mazilu becomes the creator of a masterfully executed painting in which we meet mysterious, enigmatic characters, caught in contemplative states or frozen in reality. The distinctive features of his art, such as the absurd and the grotesque could be noticed since his student years at the Institute of Fine Arts "Nicolae Grigorescu" in Bucharest. Tracing the origin of his compositions, they represent abstract constructions, gradually conceived by the artist in emblematic images. Preventing logic from intervening, the artist transforms constructed forms into figures. From here the process evolves to create an atmosphere that complements the world of its characters, reflecting interrelated psychological complexities and realities. (G.M.)
