So far, Adrian Ghenie’s artistic journey has been marked by multiple and important stylistic and thematic transformations, his works have become increasingly complex, with themes tackling increasingly problematic subjects, illustrating the disparity between objective reality and subjective memory, the relics of the 20th century and the emblematic personalities that have stirred recent history. Time is unforgiving, and memory can be so deceiving as to generate pleasant memories of a sombre period, clinging to simple things and ephemeral thoughts, which may overshadow or lose sight of the horrors of the past. Such subjective memories may become a hazard for current and historical reality. When history is forgotten, it is condemned to repeat itself. Ghenie’s works capture and explore precisely the disparity occurring between reality and memory, not to balance it, but rather to use it as an eternal reminder for the onlooker. Ghenie’s sombre and deserted landscapes are marked by the structural tension between the abstract form and representation, and they manage to mesmerize the onlooker and to draw him into that dark world, darkened and thronging with the relics of the past.
