Although it was not encountered as a pigment in prehistoric times, blue surely existed before mankind, in the water and the sky so vital for life. We can find a first visual representation of blue at the Egyptians, at some point in the 3rd millennium B. C., as they used lazurites (lapis lazuli) to decorate death masks. For a long time, blue did not even have a name of its own. Thus, in the Odyssey, Homer describes the sea as having the colour of "dark wine". A second literary landmark, of great importance, originates from the religious sphere, more specifically from the most widespread Christian prayer, which states: "on earth, as it is in heaven". Thus, cosmic blue is mirrored in the marine telluric, in the springs, lakes, and seas which surround all that is visible. Vermeer, Hokusai, Van Gogh, or Picasso, all the great artists placed blue in the spotlight. Matisse said: "A certain blue enters your soul", and Van Gogh wrote to his brother: "Cobalt is a divine colour and there is nothing as fine for putting an atmosphere around things." Through the invitation to meditative contemplation, "Sabin Bălașa’s blue" aims to access the subconscious or "our inner eye". The mysteries of life and death, of childhood and youth, the apprehensions, the fears of disaster, the energy of the universe are felt at a sensorial level. Each one of Sabin Bălașa’s canvases seems to be a window, "a porthole open to the universe", a universe populated by feminine and masculine beings, captured in their initiatic journey. Sabin Bălașa’s landscapes stand out due to a note of melancholy, an invasion of colour in a distinctive world, a realm of the unconscious and of dreams.
