The symbiosis between the formal and conceptual artistic concerns and Paul Neagu’s esoteric and philosophical approaches led to the genesis of the well-known symbol Hyphen, which market his entire artistic journey, through its chameleonic nature. Depending on the context where it occurs, Hyphen acquires various meanings and identities, like a multi-valent transmission channel, and it is one of the fundamental symbols for the philosophical code invented by Neagu, "Generative Art Code". He created this code in a very intuitive manner, very successfully illustrated visually in his personal exhibition from MoMA in 1975, when the Hyphen concept was also displayed for the first time. The word "hyphen" is of Greek origin, with "hyphenekinon" meaning "the place established for a meeting, the place where two elements meet". Starting from this meaning, Neagu transforms hyphen into the junction place between abstract and metaphysical concepts, the bridge between the hierarchical stages of transformation (such as the bridge between mineral-vegetative-animal-human-superhuman). Hyphen joins and, at the same time, divides two distinct elements’ it is a connector constantly generating new concepts, by establishing that catalytic meeting point. The hyphen was the artist’s basic instrument, which originated the development of the generative art code and based on which he managed to put together a unique visual language, which had the unique property of morphing, according to the context and the materials employed.
