Each stroke of the brush in Mazilu’s painting is precise, each figure is meticulously defined. However, the artist’s universe is very enigmatic. The mystery is rendered by the characters’ life in itself, a life fully defined by the relations between the illustrated beings, between the inside and the outside, light and shadow, complementary and the chiaroscuro. The uniqueness of his style is outlined by this effervescent dialogue between end of 20th century surrealism, Romanian medieval art and Renaissance art in the Netherlands. At the origin of his compositions lie abstract structures which he gradually builds, using representative images. Through this process, the abstract becomes a harmonious mirroring of the artist’s experiences, through unusual and enigmatic figurative elements. The atmosphere and the space enveloping the characters are the ones that define the universe of Mazilu’s paintings, a universe reflecting the complexities and the realities of our own environment. In each of his paintings, the grotesque and the absurd can be found in the small gestures of the composite beings. The characters play a role defined by the artist, a role that they don’t want, hence their disappointed, sombre faces. Each of his paintings seems to be a sketch, it is a ludic leap of imagination or of faith, in the darkness of matters yet unimaginable: it is this movement towards "the beyond", one defying limits and frontiers, defining the dynamics and the dynamism of an art that intoxicates just as much through its technical mastery as it does through the subtlety and outrage of its imagination.
