Obverse inscription: CONSTANTINOS S LEOh O hEOS Obverse description: Semi-circular marginal inscription, interrupted on the lower side by the frontal busts of the emperors Constantine V (to the left) with short beard, and Leon IV (to the right), beardless. Both are depicted wearing cross crowns and clamyde fastened on the right shoulder with fibula. Between the busts a globule exists and above them, an equilateral cross. Reverse inscription: G - LE - ON PAMЧL Φ Reverse description: Semi-circular marginal inscription, interrupted at the top in two points by the frontal bust of the Emperor Leon III, depicted with a short beard. The emperor is wearing a cross crown and loros and is holding a cross potent in his right hand. This piece is much rarer compared to the Byzantine gold emissions from the V-VII centuries. The piece illustrates changes which occurred in imperial monetary iconography during the reign of Constantine V and the joint reign of Leon IV, when imperial representations and symbols of power became more significant at the expense of religious images. The imperial portraits, the title written in Greek, and the iconographic composition are expressions of the new imperial ideology promoted in the 8th century and document the evolution of Byzantine art and official propaganda. Also, the coin is an essential source for the study of imperial monetary organization and the economy of the Byzantine Empire.
