Johann Stumpf (1500-1578) was a Swiss theologian, historian and cartographer of German origin. Following his conversion to Protestantism, he settled in Zürich and started working on the elaboration of a Swiss History, a monumental work proving him as a man of letters. He also completed an Atlas, which was published for the first time in 1562, and which also included this map of Europe, a piece which was eliminated from the second edition, issued in 1566.
