Apart from his most famous work, "Orbis Terrarum", Dutch cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) published, in 1579, the first edition of his work "Parergorn", an addition to the aforementioned atlas, in which the current piece is included. "The Ancient World" was inspired by the achievements of ancient geographer Claudius Ptolemy, whom Ortelius had studied thoroughly and used as a role model. Engraving on copper.
