Androgynous representations (with both masculine and feminine traits) appear in many African cultures and symbolize the unity of opposites, supreme fertility, and creative power. It is very likely to have been used by a secret society (like Bwami at Lega or Bwadi bwa Kifwebe at Songye), as a sacred object with an esoteric role.
