The pendant marks the time of proclamation of the Kingdom of Romania following the Great Powers' recognition of the independence gained as a result of the War of Independence of 1877. It was offered to officials during Queen Mary's visit to the United States in 1926. The medallion is made of enamel, fixed in a bronze frame, and includes the motto "By ourselves” which refers to the fight of the Romanian nation.
