Princess Wilhelmina, born in 1880, became Queen of the Netherlands in 1890 following the death of her father, King William III. Since she was under age, her mother, Queen Emma, became regent. On September 6, 1898, Wilhemina came of age and became queen, a position she held until 1948. The medal has been minted on this occasion. The obverse depicts the profile portrait of the young queen and the reverse, an allegorical group consisting of two female figures, the queen on the right and the Dutch nation on the left.
