King Ferdinand I, also known as the "Land Unifier", was the first king of all Romanians, the sovereign under whose reign the Great Union of 1918 was achieved, the most important act in the history of the Romanian people. The medal, made by Romanian engravers and artists, Constantin Baraschi and Anastase Demian, includes on the obverse the bust of the king, facing left and surrounded by his title, and on the reverse, in the centre, a map of Greater Romania, and the coats of arms of the main regions and the phrase in Romanian and Latin "Eternally united / Etiam contra omnes" or "Even against all".
