The bronze medal commemorates inauguration of Galati harbour featuring on the obverse the anchor, symbol of the city, and the legend written on six lines "The Commune of the city of Galaţi under the reign of Carol I, year 1873 when the quay was built", surrounded by a wreath of laurels. The same wreath frames on the reverse, this time in five lines, the text "Public works are monuments to the people, praise those who protect them", to emphasize the importance of both building and keeping the harbour in good order, aiming at continuing and keeping the pace of modernisation of Romania both at the end of the 19th century and in the next century.
