The "Ruling House" medal, part of the "Bene Merenti of the Ruling House" Order, was created by King Carol II in 1935 and awarded to Romanian civilians and military staff for outstanding merit in the service of the Crown. Military swords were added to the decoration from 1937 until 1940, when the medal is replaced by the Order of "Saint George". The obverse shows the cipher of King Carol II, surrounded by a wreath of laurels and the inscription "January 1, 1842", a date referring to the history of the House of Hohenzollern and the Campaign of that year, while the reverse side depicts, in addition to the coat of arms of the Kingdom, the motto "Nihil Sine Deo" and a laurel wreath similar to the first one.
