As the first monarch of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty in Romania, Carol I was initially proclaimed ruler on May 10, 1866, and then the first king of Romania on May 10, 1881, the medal marked in 1891 the celebration of 25 years of reign. Made by the famous Austrian engraver Anton Scharff, it includes the bust of King Carol I, facing left and surrounded by both his title and his years of reign, 1866 - 1891 on the obverse, and the reverse includes an allegorical representation of Romania, holding a feather and next to it a lion, a shield with the coat of arms of the kingdom and the inscription "Nihil sine Deo" or "Nothing without God".
