The medal was made by the Polish-German origin French sculptor Wladimir Hegel. He was the head of the sculpture department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest and created many statuary works of art, such as that of Miron Costin from Iași or C.A. Rosetti of Bucharest. The obverse displays the effigy of the goddess Athens, to the Greeks, or Minerva, to the Romans, personification of wisdom and intelligence. The reverse shows the Athenaeum building, viewed from the front, and the inscription "1865-1905", along with the location and the name of the edifice.
