The coin was issued by Mircea the Elder, the most important ruler of Wallachia, who reigned between 1386 and 1418. Known in Romanian numismatics as the Wallachian ducat, it falls under the system of ducats struck in Venice starting in 1202. The engraving of the coin, both on the obverse and the reverse, follows the common pattern of the Wallachian ducat, used in all issues of Wallachian rulers from Vlaicu I (1364 - 1377) to Basarab Laiotă (1473 - 1477, with frequent interruptions). The legends on the coins of Mircea the Elder were written either in Cyrillic characters or in Latin characters.
