PROVENANCE

The coin was purchased from an auction house in Germany. The owner has all the purchase documents, and copies of these, with personal data and prices erased, will be made available to the buyer.

Obverse legend: the head of Hercules wearing the lion's skin, oriented to the right Reverse legend: KALLATIA, next to a grain spike and a club above and a quiver with a bow at the bottom. The second Pontic city that minted coins was Callatis. Regarding the foundation at the end of the VI century B.Chr. of the city of Callatis (today Mangalia, Romania), a Dorian colony, there is information from Pseudo – Scymnos, showing that it was established by Greeks coming from Heraclea Pontic (today Eregli, in Turkey). The silver Kallatian coins had a relatively limited circulation area, the number of known pieces being quite low, justified by the small number of discoveries. The first issues of the Callatis colony are the silver drachmas, struck according to the Aeginetic weight system (from Aegina) also used in cities like Heraclea Pontic, Byzantium, and Sinope. On the obverse appears the beardless Herakles, the mythical ancestor of the Greeks from Callatis, with the skin of the Nemean lion on his head, and on the reverse, next to the wheat spike, there are the weapons of the Greek hero, the club, the bow, and the quiver with arrows poisoned with the Hydra's blood from Lerna.
