Oftentimes likened to Matisse or Dufy, Max Arnold distinguished himself in Romanian painting especially in his role as a watercolourist. He is a master of the art of suggestion, is a contemplative observer and a creator of optimistic art. He honed his craft beyond watercolour, also working with oil. The work at hand is a still life depiction created with oil on cardboard, where the pictoriality of the shape intertwines with the constructive line. The chosen colour is vibrant, delicate and fluid; and the colour gains rhythm through the brushstrokes imprinted on the canvas by the artist. Max Arnold balances the objective rendering with his own vision in a genuine game of textures, while maintaining the accuracy of real shades in rendering reality on canvas. Light in his works is used to harmonise the composition, to provide an incentive for the depicted objects, and not to create contrast. A fine connoisseur of colours, Max Arnold creates a decorative still nature, the semiotics of which is easily accessible even to the untrained viewer.
