Research information

A version of the work is reproduced in the album "Dan Hatmanu", Dana Art Publishing House, Iasi, 2008, under the name "Near the George Enescu Conservatory", cat. 17.

Starting from the motto "Iași – sentimental evocation", Dan Hatmanu will carry out a genuine incursion along his affective memory, searching within himself for the artistic motives that lay at the basis of the series dedicated to the Moldavian city. Possessing an exceptional penchant for the city landscape, the artist will poetically reconfigure the real plan. We will observe personified nature intertwining with the architectural buildings and the vestiges of the modern world (a clear example is the vehicle that reoccurs throughout a series of works following the same street corner). Predominant within this series are the shades of ochre, which will extend from the innermost corners of the house to the exterior of the courtyard, towards the vehicle's bodywork. The landscape, furrowed by the shades of white of the freshly laid snowdrift, also indicates buildings submerged under the silence of the snow or the grey-blue sky, composed of cool tones, harmonized by a few explosive accents that the artist skillfully places at key points of the work, aiming to create light effects. The present landscape, also presented by the artist in other works, indicates a geographical placement in the immediate vicinity of the George Enescu Conservatory. The remembrance-paintings from the life of the "city of seven hills" reveal views from Târgul Cucului, the indispensable monumental buildings that house cultural or academic institutions, churches, taverns, random streets, rooftops or orchards. Dan Hatmanu will be concerned with symmetry and precise ordering of the elements of the work, always considering the atmospheric details and especially the rendering of the seasons. This work becomes representative for the figurative part of the works included in the series dedicated to Iași, however the artist will also revisit the motif in a noticeably abstract manner.
