There is a theory in transactional analysis that calls adult interactions "games" as they enact the same patterns of behaviour over and over again. From this perspective, all communication with others, conscious or not, can be seen as a "parlour game". But what we play in adulthood is infinitely more complex - and complicated - than the essential interactions of early life. Nothing is one-dimensional in the adult world, in the 'here and now', for once out of the bright light of childhood, objects - metaphors for emotions and relationships - lose their simplicity. Flowers, walnuts, cones, all the still life elements pour down on us in an abundance of shapes and colours. Bold colours take on softer hues, angular shapes reveal diplomatically curved contours. We have more patience; but also more doubts. But the invitation to play remains: the game table is time itself, and the pieces disintegrate if you try too hard to take control. "Jocuri de societate" ("Parlour Games") rewards you with the satisfaction of the observer returned from an initiatory journey into the world of play, now able to admire differently the richness of meaning of everyday human communication.
