A member of last century's Romanian avant-garde, Jules Perahim collaborated with, and founded magazines such as "unu" and "Alge". He made his debut in a personal exhibition in 1932. Although he never took over the "surrealist" title, his work is the result par excellence of the influence of this artistic movement. His work can be divided in two stages of creation: the Bucharest stage and the French stage. In Romania, the authoritarian regime limits his creative enthusiasm, forcing him to limit his imaginary to book illustration and conceiving the stage design for theatre shows. Arriving abroad in 1969, Perahim would release his creative self and would paint frantically. The French cultural environment would contribute to the notable development of the creation of the painter of the invisible. A significant part of his work would be exhibited in Parisian galleries in the last part of the 20th Century. We cannot speak about a delimitation of Perahim's work into theme cycles, but we can notice the fact that his characters from his second stage are losing their human features and mostly tend towards the demineralisation which is typical for surrealism. The artist creates true visual narratives where he establishes the basis of a utopic universe. He accomplishes dreamy compositions, lacking a well-defined horizon and populated by fantastic characters. The performance of motifs and cropped beings, to which he assigns random shapes, lead towards broad means of interpretation of his works. Whether they have human, animal or vegetable valences, his characters become authentic chimerical representations. Perahim works with a photographic precision, uses more or less bizarre juxtapositions and images that seem to be extracted from his subconscious.
