PROVENANCE

colecția Jean-Philippe Guilbert

Tadashi Kawamata is a Japanese contemporary artist, who, even since childhood, manifested a resounding interest for urban spaces, in which he would often create as an adult. Oriented towards sculptural and conceptual installations, Kawamata executes monumental works, which he displays in exterior public spaces. His career reached new climaxes especially after he took part in the Venice Biennale in 1987. The artist was often included in international exhibitions and activated as a teacher in artistic education units in Tokyo and Paris. Kawamata makes a transcendental approach to the fields of architecture, history or sociology as well. He works amid demolition and building sites and is concerned with the evolution of the environment within the construction-destruction paradigm. He uses recycled or abandoned materials, mainly made of wood, creating unconventional structures. He rethinks the connections between day-to-day spaces, assigning them new meanings, starting from the premises of the interaction between human beings and the surrounding environment.
