Catherine II, Empress of Russia (1762-1796) modernised the empire by adopting reforms conceived in view of the enlightened despotism, an ideology specific for the 18th century. The texts that were the basis for the legal reform, carried out at the desire of the empress between 1764 and 1766 were published for the first time in a volume in the capital of the empire in 1770, in four languages, which ensured European circulation for the work, known at the time under the popular tile Nakaz (instructions). The copy has a period binding. The covers are made of leather-covered cardboard, with the spine divided into six cartouche designs. The covers have been affected by the passage of time. There are tears in the leather cover, in the upper left part and in the lower left corner.
