Emanuel Vidović is undoubtedly the greatest painting persona of Split at the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Vidović received his art education in Venice, which, along with Chioggia, is a frequent motive of his vedute. However, most of his life he spent in his native Split, whose port was an inexhaustible source of inspiration and a permanently present motif in his painting. In his painting, one can recognize the desire to express the atmosphere and spiritual dimension of space, refined color and emphasized atmosphericity. At the beginning of the 20th century, Vidović's painting underwent a transformation, moving away from impressionism and bright coloring towards abstraction, divisionist, almost monochromatic use of color and symbolistic mood. These characteristics are visible in a series of vedute of Split harbor created in the first decades of the 20th century, including "Split Harbor," which embodies precisely these best years of Vidović's oil depictions of Split. Quivering strokes, dark, reduced palette on a large canvas depict the port of the artist's native city in an irreplaceable Vidović manner.
